Judo is an Olympic sport with roots in traditional Japanese martial arts including Juijitsu. It was founded in Japan in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano, an educator. Although the word "judo" translates as 'gentle way' from the Japanese words "ju" and "do", it features dynamic throws, chokes and joint locks. The fundamental principles of judo are "maximum efficiency, minimum effort" and "mutual welfare and benefit".
Unlike karate or taekwondo, judo as generally practiced has neither kicks, punches, strikes nor uses weapons. It is known for dynamic throws, grappling and submissions.
Judo was added to the Modern Olympic Games in 1964, and is contested in a number of weight categories by both male and female athletes.
